Are you 50-plus and feeling your age? You certainly can’t stop the ageing process, we all know that, but it is possible to feel good and look great however old you are with a little exercise, a healthy diet and some fabulous clothes. Follow these three simple tips for feeling fit and fabulous over 50!
Set yourself a fitness goal
The key to looking and feeling good is exercise. Walking is probably the most sensible type for women to follow as they get older but if you fancy something a little more strenuous, how about a mix of walking and jogging?
The Race for Life 5K events take place every spring when hundreds of thousands of women take part around the UK to raise money for cancer research. Not only is it a fantastic cause but it’s also a great opportunity to do something for your own wellbeing.
You don’t have to run and they are not races. Lots of women walk or alternate walking with running. It’s sociable, great fun and there is still plenty of time to get ready. Find yourself a ‘Couch potato to 5K’ training plan. They are easy to follow and the NHS website has a nine week version: just about right if you want to join in with a Race for Life this spring.
Eat a healthy Mediterranean-style diet
Research shows that those who eat a diet rich in olive oil, fruit and vegetables and low in sugar and fats are less likely to develop life threatening diseases. Not only that, a Mediterranean-style diet is great for your skin, hair and waistline. And, as we all know, if you feel good on the inside, you are going to look great on the outside.
Dress in clothes you love
One of the most ageing things we can do is to dress in the kind of clothes we think women of our age should be wearing rather than clothes we actually like. Just because we are over 40 doesn’t mean we have to turn our backs on colourful clothes that show off our bodies.
Don’t ever fall into the trap of thinking you look better in something dark and baggy than something in a gorgeous colour that skims over your curves. No-one does! Bonmarche always stocks wonderful clothes for real women, women who may be over 40, no longer a size eight (if they ever were!) and who love to dress in feminine clothes that really flatter them. Come and look around our stores to see what we mean. You won’t be disappointed.
