Short dresses were generally shunned in favour of long skirts and crop top combos and floor-length gowns at the 2014 British Soap Awards.
There was very little black around as the stars went for colours and nudes, but it was red that proved to be one of the most popular choices, something that was slightly unfortunate given that the venue had mostly been decked-out in similar tones.
A trouser suit is not the obvious choice for an awards outfit, but Coronation Street’s Sexiest Female prize winner Michelle Keegan stole the show in a monochrome suit designed by BCBG, perfectly matched with the black and white suit worn by her finance, reality television celebrity Mark Wright. The couple’s outfits sparked comparisons with big screen movie star pair Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who caused a storm at this year’s BAFTAs by wearing matching clothes.
Coronation Street’s Brooke Vincent rocked the top and skirt look in a gold Grecian-look embellished top with a floor skimming white skirt, designed by Liverpool’s Mark Melia. Brooke showed that crop tops can ooze style and sophistication when teamed correctly with the right skirt or trousers.
Long dresses were undoubtedly the order of the night, however, with plenty of sexy backs and thigh splits on show. The Hollyoaks actress Steph Waring set fans tweeting in a striking canary yellow full-length dress by the Ono Uno label from Manchester designer Nadine Merabi, and Nikki Sanderson, a Best Actress nominee, made a dramatic statement by wearing a Zeynep Kartal corset dress with a ruffle-train and plenty of perfect pins on show.
Hollyoaks’ Jorgie Porter was likened to Marilyn Monroe after choosing another Ono Uno dress that demonstrated perfectly why she was one of the awards’ Sexiest Female nominees. The gown was a nude silk creation with detailing provided by a gold belt and a top half that left very little to the imagination.
Coronation Street actress Catherine Tyldesley went for a bolder colour choice, opting for a tangerine one-shoulder gown designed especially for her by Merseyside creator Philip Armstrong. Georgia May Foote, another Sexiest Female nominee, chose a Mark Melia floor-length creation in oyster pink, while youngster Tisha Merry looked all white in a Zeynap Kartal off-the-shoulder dress.
As mentioned earlier, one of the biggest colour trends at this year’s ceremony was red and the stars showed that they had no fear of blending in with the carpet and backdrop. There was no chance of that happening to Emmerdale beauty Natalie Anderson, who made sure she stood out in a floor-length creation. The multi-talented actress actually designed the scarlet gown herself as part of her Enais Chapman fashion label project.
Jennifer Metcalf combined two of this year’s biggest trends by wearing a ruby crop top and skirt combination, finished off with matching red lips and the much-coveted Athena Alta leopard print heels from Christian Louboutin. The outfit oozed sex appeal but would only be a good choice for a woman with a perfect back.
Bollywood star Amy Jackson also went for a sexy look in a slinky purple gown, which somewhat overshadowed the unusual and untidy jacket, tie and trouser combo chosen by her Coronation Street actor boyfriend Ryan Thomas.
Some stars did go for short dresses, including Natalie Cassidy, Julie Hesmondhalgh, and EastEnders’ Rita Simons, while Cindy Beale Junior, alias actress Mimi Keene, sent the crowd dotty in a white and black spotty prom dress.
Debbie Rush also opted for a prom dress, but her look was simple and sophisticated. The dress itself was black and embellished but she topped it off with a pair of gold killer heels, creating the perfect classic combination.
