He’s designed clothes for the most famous and beautiful women in the world – Madonna, Elizabeth Taylor, Dame Shirley Bassey, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joan Collins, Faye Dunaway and Patsy Kensit. And, of course, the most famous of them all, Princess Diana. Who can forget the stunning wedding gown she wore as she walked down the aisle of Westminster Abbey in 1981?
You might expect David Emanuel to behave like a Hollywood star himself given his client list, but not at all. He has a great sense of humour, is happy to laugh at himself and remains loyal to his Welsh roots. This is exactly why he made it through to the final of I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here in 2013. His charm, humour and down-to-earth nature warmed the hearts of the British public. They knew he was one of them, despite the fact that he has dressed the most famous women in the world. There’s nothing snobby about David Emanuel.
So the David Emanuel Collection for Bonmarché should come as no surprise. The collection is for real women like us, women who are no longer in the full flush of youth, women who have real figures with real curves, women who do not wear size eight but size 14 or more.
If you watch any of the videos for Bonmarché in which David talks about his clothes range you’ll be struck by his warmth and sincerity. He really does want to design clothes that ordinary British women will feel fabulous wearing and, importantly, be able to afford.
It is so refreshing to see a designer of his calibre choosing to design reasonably-priced clothing that makes the woman wearing it feel gorgeous again, no matter what her age and shape. David seems to know intuitively what normal women want and says that he finds his inspiration in Bonmarché customers he meets in the stores.
When he is planning a collection David often visits the stores unannounced to ask women who shop there what they really want from his clothing range. Isn’t this a far cry from the designers of the clothes you see on the catwalks at the London, Paris and New York fashion shows? Surely none of those outfits can ever have been designed with real women in mind? Thankfully for us the David Emanuel spring collection for real women will be in stores and online soon.
